Teachers of the All-University Employees Association in Peshawar took to the streets on Monday.
The protesters blocked the Khyber Road and marched towards the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Provincial Assembly. They chanted slogans against the government.
The teachers are protesting against a reduction in allowance announced by the Peshawar university management last week. They said that their livelihoods are at stake.
“We have already suffered a lot because of the coronavirus lockdown and now this,” one of them said.
The demonstrators demanded that the government should take back its decision to increase university fees as well.
In these tough times when the government should be facilitating us, they are instead increasing our problems, another teacher said.
At 2:12pm, the police baton-charged and fired tear gas shells at the protesters. A number of teachers including KP Federation for Universities Chairperson Salahuddin have been arrested.
