Director vows legal action after Javed Iqbal’s release halted

Abu Aleeha’s Javed Iqbal: The Untold Story of a Serial Killer, starring Yasir Hussain and Ayesha Omar, is not releasing in cinemas tomorrow, Friday.

The decision to postpone the release was taken after the filmmakers were served a notice by the Punjab Information and Culture Department. Javed Iqbal will now be “re-examined in the wake of persistent complaints from different quarters”.

The film was stopped from release despite being cleared by all censors.

Abu Aleeha, in a voicenote shared with SAMAA Digital, has vowed legal action against the halt. He will hold a press conference with the cast on Monday.

“This is a joke,” Aleeha says. “Just because one person is put off by the film doesn’t mean the fate of other people will be decided by their mood.”

Javed Iqbal’s premiere was held in Karachi on Tuesday, attended by several stars, including Iqra Aziz and Dananeer.

The film was previously slated for release in December, but due to Hollywood films raking in more numbers, the makers decided to push it back to January to prevent losses.

The film stars Yasir Hussain as Javed Iqbal, Pakistan’s worst known serial killer who, in 1999, confessed to have murdered 100 boys in Lahore. According to Yasir, he had been offered by several producers to play Javed Iqbal, but the projects never happened.

The film stars Ayesha Omar and Paras Masroor as police officers. It is produced by Javed Ahmed Kakepoto.
