The Federal Investigation Agency has directed banks to freeze TikToker Hareem Shah’s accounts as it investigates possible controversial money laundering claims.
On January 12, Hareem Shah found herself at the centre of a controversy after she posted a video to Instagram. The one-minute clip showed Hareem with several bundles of foreign currency notes. She claimed to have smuggled a “heavy amount” from Pakistan to the UK.
“So be careful while bringing the amount because you can get caught,” says Hareem in the video. “No one stopped me you know, and they can’t, of course. I came here very easily, but the law in Pakistan works more against the poor, so be wary of that.”

Hours after the video caused an uproar online, the FIA announced a probe into Hareem’s claims. Hareem had travelled under her real name Fiza Hussain to the UK via Doha, taking a flight from Karachi on January 10. Transferring money through illegal channels amounts to money laundering, stated the FIA.
But shortly after, Hareen released another video and backtracked on her earlier statement. The money in the video came from the sale of her sister’s car in London and the video had been recorded as a prank, claimed Hareem.
In a latest development, however, the FIA has written to banks in Lahore and Karachi to freeze Hareem’s accounts. She has two accounts in Pakistan.
