JI calls off Karachi protest, Balochistan attack, coronavirus update

The Jamaat-e-Islami and Sindh government have reached an agreement to amend the controversial local government law, prompting the JI to wrap up their 29-day sit-in outside Sindh Assembly.

Thus the party called off its scheduled protest in Karachi today (Friday).

The local government minister, Nasir Hussain Shah, and Karachi Administrator Murtaza Wahab announced the agreement late Thursday night.

According to the agreement, the Karachi mayor will be the chairman of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board, besides heading the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board.


Ten army personnel have been martyred in Balochistan’s Kech area after men opened fire on a check post, the military’s media wing Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) has said.

The attack took place at night between January 25 and January 26.

Prime Minister Imran Khan condemned the attack.

“Our brave soldiers continue to lay down their lives to keep us safe from terrorists,” the premier tweeted. “I salute the 10 martyred soldiers who repulsed a terrorist fire raid on checkpost in Kech Balochistan.”


Quetta Gladiators will face Peshawar Zalmi in the second match of Pakistan Super League’s seventh edition today at the National Stadium in Karachi. The match will begin at 7:30 pm.

According to the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), the seating capacity has been reduced to 25% for all matches in Karachi, while a decision on the number of spectators in Lahore has to be taken in due course.



Pakistan’s Covid positivity rate stayed above 10% for the eighth consecutive day as the government mulling new restrictions to curb the spread of the virus. In the last 24 hours, as many as 8,183 coronavirus cases were reported nationwide and 30 people died.

During the fifth wave, Karachi has become a Covid hotspot with a positivity rate of 26.91%.


The Pakistani rupee managed to halt its losing streak against the US Dollar Thursday. It traded at Rs178.50.

Meanwhile, Pakistan forex reserves have declined by $846 million in the week ended on January 21, according to a statement issued by the State Bank of Pakistan.

The reserves stood at $22.482 billion including $6,292 held by commercial banks.
